Design considerations
My name is Jeremy Gordon and I operate this website. I have attempted to make the site accessible in the following ways:-
- Magnifying or zooming the site. I have used Cascading Style Sheets ("CSS") and tables for positioning of elements in such a way to ensure that if the page is zoomed the various parts of the site remain clear and do not overlap. In other words I have tried to achieve a "liquid layout" for the site. I have tested zoom to 200% in all major browsers. Most pages can be zoomed more than that. I have used absolute sizes for fonts because this is easier, so in Internet Explorer it may not be possible to alter the text size although this can be achieved using zoom instead. I have found in practice that the zoom in other browsers work better than in Internet Explorer.
- Keyboard interface. Each page has been tested for its keyboard interface and adjustment have been made to the script to ensure that this works completely. The keyboard will start with the right hand column then progress to the main column and finish in the footer where there are some more links.
- Screen readers. I have tested the pages using Jaws and each part of the pages is accessible with a screen reader and in a logical sequence. There is some explanatory text for a screen reader on the home page and on the accessibility page. The home page has some mouseovers with important content and I was able to get into these using Jaws. The mouseover content is text only, and it is visible to the screen reader because it is not hidden, simply moved a long way of screen so it cannot be seen by sighted users.
- Other adjustments. I have used alt text for images but only where appropriate. There are some images which need no further explanation for screen reader users.
